Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (Mt 16:24–25). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.

Pastor John MacArthur tells us in his message, Winning By Losing: The Paradox of Discipleship, “… [that] this was one of Jesus’ recurring themes. There are some things that our Lord especially taught, some specially loved truths which He went back to again and again and again. We see them over and over in the Scripture. And we will never understand salvation and we will never understand discipleship unless we understand this principle…so oft repeated. The principle is winning by losing.”

Jesus loves us presently in the same way that he loved us at the moment on the Cross

Learned something really beautiful the other day. The Greek Verb ἀγαπῶντι (loves) is only used 1 time in the Bible … It is a present active participle Verb used when John wrote to the Churches in Asia —-

5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (Re 1:5). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.

In other words, Jesus loves us presently in the same way that he loved us at the moment on the Cross. He loves us today as He did yesterday. His love was not just something in the past. John MacArthur has a sermon on Revelation 1 and he pointed out that sometimes we go back in time to what that love must have been like, but in reality it is the same love today. His love is never ending. Now that is some BIG LOVE!

In the Beginning God Created the Heavens and the Earth – Genesis 1:1

Genesis 11 [widescreen]

Bara
The Hebrew word for “create” (bara) is used in the OT to refer to divine activity only—Yahweh alone serves as its grammatical subject—implying the writer wanted to emphasize that people cannot create in the way that Yahweh creates and that no other god can claim to be the creator. The verb bara also conveys the idea of ordering or determining function, suggesting God’s creative activity consists of bringing proper order and function to the cosmos.

Commit To Pray – Voice of the Martyrs

“Every day, Christians in the most dangerous places on Earth are working to advance the gospel [of Jesus Christ] at any cost. These front-line workers have been interrogated, beaten and arrested for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Yet they boldly continue in God’s work. Please consider supporting these faithful Christian brothers and sisters in prayer. When you commit to pray regularly for one year, [Voice of the Martyrs] will send you a card with the name and photo of a front-line worker so you can keep it in your Bible or another location as a reminder to pray.” Voice of the Martyrs, February 2019

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:10-12 (ESV)

12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:12-17 (ESV)

1 Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, 2 and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. 4 And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ. 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5 (ESV)
